Safety & Tourist Traps

Quick First Layer
(Expandable boxes)

Typical scams and their avoidance

1. The "Konzumlány" / The Bar Scam

2. "Freelance" Taxis

3. Street Currency Exchange

4. Fake Ticket Inspectors

5. Overpriced Tourist Menus

6. Illegal Street Vendors (Vapes and E-cigarettes)

Police report: If one becomes a victim of a scam or theft, filing a police report (although it rarely recovers the money) is generally necessary to validate insurance claims. Operators at the emergency call center (112) speak English, but the language proficiency of street patrols may be limited.
The concept of a "tourist trap" ranges on a wide scale. The Bar Scam is a criminal offense, whereas an overpriced goulash soup in a Váci utca restaurant is legally permissible, merely representing a service with poor value for money. The dividing line between the two is physical intimidation and hidden pricing.

Uniform European emergency number (Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade): 112 (Toll-free).
