5. Official Exchange Rate

Current official mid-market exchange rate: Can be checked on the website of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB). Source: mnb.hu/en/arfolyamok

Large denominations: The largest Hungarian banknote is the 20,000 HUF bill. Smaller shops, bakeries, or market vendors early in the morning are frequently unable to provide change for it when purchasing only a coffee or pastry. In such cases, card payment or the use of smaller denominations (1,000, 2,000, 5,000 HUF) can be applied.
The exchange rate of the Forint (HUF) against the Euro and the Dollar fluctuates continuously. Euro prices displayed in shops and restaurants frequently do not track official exchange rate changes for weeks, which further increases the unpredictability of Euro cash payments.
