Elements and logic of the network

1. Metro (M1, M2, M3, M4)

Fast, high-capacity underground backbone network.

Four lines that intersect in the city center (Deák Ferenc Square, Kálvin Square, Keleti Railway Station). M1 (yellow, Millennium Underground) is the oldest, with smaller cars and frequent stops under Andrássy Avenue. M3 (blue) is the longest north-south axis.

Since June 2026, metro operating hours have been extended. On weekdays, the last trains (M2, M3, M4) leave the city center around midnight, while on weekends (Friday and Saturday nights) they run until approximately 1:00 AM. After these times, the night bus network takes over their role.

2. Tram (Villamos)

Dense surface network connecting the city center and the outer districts.

Trams 4 and 6 run on the Pest Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút) 24 hours a day, being one of the busiest lines in Europe. Tram 2 runs along the Pest Danube bank on a panoramic route. The "Buda interwoven network" (budai fonódó hálózat - lines 19, 41, 17) connects North and South Buda along the Danube without the need to transfer.

3. Bus & Trolleybus (Busz és Trolibusz)

Supplementary and mountainous network.

Blue buses cover almost every point of the city, including the steep Buda hills and the Castle District. Red trolleybuses (electric buses with overhead wires) operate exclusively on the Pest side, in the city center and in Zugló (District XIV).

4. Suburban Railway (HÉV)

Suburban surface railway.

The green trains connect the outer districts and suburbs (e.g., Szentendre, Aquincum) with the center.

Within the city limits, standard BKK tickets are valid for them, but if you leave the administrative boundary of Budapest (e.g., towards Szentendre), an extension ticket must be purchased.

Constraints and Consequences

Transferring with a single ticket: The traditional, paper-based single ticket is only valid for a single, uninterrupted journey. When transferring, a new ticket must be validated. Exception: Transferring between metro lines underground is free and does not require a new ticket. If frequent surface transfers are required, time-based tickets or daily travelcards can be more cost-effective (refer to the section on Tickets & Passes).

Inspections: Ticket inspectors (BKK staff with armbands) frequently check tickets at metro entrances/exits and on surface lines during travel. The penalty (surcharge) amount is significant and can be paid on the spot (also by card) or later.

Uncertainties and Interpretational Differences

The currently ongoing reconstructions in the Buda Castle District (National Hauszmann Program) are rebuilding the late 19th-century Eclectic conditions, often demolishing the modernist additions of the second half of the 20th century. The age of the buildings can thus be visually deceptive.
