1. Public Parking & The 3-Hour Limit

The city is divided into four parking zones (A, B, C, D). As you move closer to the city center, hourly rates increase, and the maximum allowed parking time decreases (capped at 3 hours in the innermost zones).

Paid periods: Typically weekdays from 8:00 to 18:00, 20:00, or 22:00 (depending on the zone). Public street parking is free in most areas on weekends.

Several providers (e.g., Wigo, GreenGo, MOL Limo) offer per-minute car rentals in Budapest, featuring both electric and petrol vehicles in their fleets.

Carsharing vehicles can park for free in Budapest's paid public parking zones (the parking fee is included in the per-minute rate).

3. Key Traffic Rules

Right-hand rule: At unmarked intersections of equal roads (which are very common in Budapest's residential areas), vehicles approaching from the right always have the right of way.

Tram priority: Trams have the right of way over cars in almost all traffic situations. Extra caution is required when turning across or driving over tram tracks.

Speed limits: 50 km/h within city limits (except in traffic-calmed zones marked with 30 km/h signs), 90 km/h outside built-up areas, and 130 km/h on highways.

Constraints and Consequences

The 3-Hour Renewal Pitfall: In the central zones, a parking session automatically stops after 3 hours. Parking apps do not automatically renew the session, as municipal rules prohibit continuous parking to encourage vehicle turnover. To leave a car in the same spot until the paid period ends (e.g., until 22:00), a new parking session must be manually started in the app after the initial 3 hours expire. Forgetting to do so will result in a fine from parking attendants.

Wheel clamps and towing: Cars parked illegally (e.g., in disabled spots, on green areas, or blocking gateways) or without a valid parking ticket may be clamped or towed by public space inspectors. The retrieval process involves fines of tens of thousands of forints and significant logistical hassle (visiting the impound lot).

P+R Parking: To avoid downtown traffic and high parking fees, P+R (Park and Ride) facilities operate on the outskirts of the city near metro and train stations. Their daily rate is a fraction of downtown street parking.

Uncertainties and Interpretational Differences

Zone boundaries: Parking zone boundaries can change from one side of the street to the other. Physical signs (indicating the zone code and paid period) can sometimes be difficult to spot. Using the GPS-based location feature in parking apps helps ensure the correct zone code is selected.
