1. 100E Airport Express Bus

Direct bus service to the city center

Time required: 35-45 minutes (depending on traffic)

Operates between the airport and Deák Ferenc tér (absolute center), stopping at Kálvin tér and Astoria. Runs 24 hours a day.

Can be highly crowded during peak hours, which may require standing with luggage. The bus features the "Budapest Pay&GO" system: touching a bank card to the onboard terminal instantly purchases and validates the ticket.

2. Bus 200E + Metro M3 (Standard public transport)

Public transport with transfer

Time required: 50-60 minutes

Bus 200E runs between the airport and Kőbánya-Kispest metro station, from where the M3 (blue) metro line connects to the city center.

Requires a transfer, which can be physically demanding with heavy or multiple pieces of luggage. The advantage is that standard BKK single tickets, travelcards, and passes are valid, making it the most cost-effective option.

3. Official Taxi

Door-to-door service

Time required: 30-40 minutes

Provides direct transport without the need to handle luggage across public spaces.
Upon arrival: Cars must be requested at the official kiosks located at the terminal exits (the contracted airport partner is Főtaxi).
Upon departure: A car can be ordered to the airport via the application of any official Budapest taxi company.

Freelance taxi drivers soliciting passengers inside the building pose pricing and safety risks and are to be avoided.

4. Shared Transfer (miniBUD)

Shared shuttle

Time required: 45-90 minutes

Provides door-to-door service but collects multiple passengers whose addresses fall along a single route.

Lower cost than a private taxi, but urban routing can significantly increase travel time, which carries logistical risks for departures (catching a flight).

Constraints and Consequences

Time buffer for departures (City to Airport): Since all options (both buses and taxis) utilize the surface road network, travel times can increase significantly during morning (7:30–9:00 AM) and afternoon (3:30–5:30 PM) rush hours. Allocating a traffic buffer of at least 20-30 minutes is justified for the route to the airport.

Night transport: The 100E bus operates at night (with a reduced schedule). However, the M3 metro does not run at night (after approx. 11:30 PM), meaning passengers using the 200E bus must transfer to night buses, which can be complex without local knowledge. At night, taxis or the 100E bus provide the most direct routing.

Uncertainties and Interpretational Differences

In the event of accidents or renovations on the airport expressway, both buses and taxis may be forced into surrounding residential areas, which can cause unpredictable delays.
