1. The "Synagogue Triangle"

Within walking distance in District VII are the centers of the three main branches of Hungarian Jewry.

2. Public Holocaust Monuments

Shoes on the Danube Bank:
A historical monument located south of Parliament on the Pest embankment, commemorating the victims shot into the river by the Arrow Cross militiamen. It can be visited free of charge 24 hours a day.

3. Living community and Kosher gastronomy

Budapest is home to the largest Jewish community in Central Europe. The kosher infrastructure is almost exclusively concentrated in District VII (the catchment area of Kazinczy utca).

Strictly supervised (glatt kosher) restaurants, kosher supermarkets, and bakeries are located here. Hungarian beverages bearing the official kosher seal (hechsher) – such as kosher plum brandy or kosher Tokaji wines – can almost exclusively be tasted at these dedicated locations.

Constraints and Consequences

Male and female spaces:
In the Orthodox (Kazinczy Street) synagogue, men and women sit separately (women in the gallery) due to religious regulations. In the Neolog (Dohány Street) synagogue, this separation is not strictly enforced for tourists during visits, but religious respect is expected everywhere.

Uncertainties and Interpretational Differences

Memory politics debates:
The interpretation of the history of World War II and the Holocaust in Hungary, particularly the question of the Hungarian state's responsibility at the time, is the subject of ongoing social and political debate. This tension is also visible in the perception of public monuments (e.g., the German occupation memorial on Szabadság tér) and the civil counter-monuments attached to them.
