1. Medieval and early modern traces (Buda)

Castle Hill has been a royal center since the 13th century. Although the current palace is largely from the 19th and 20th centuries, the street structure of the civilian part of the Castle District and the foundations of several of its buildings are medieval.
The 150-year Ottoman (Turkish) occupation (1541–1686) left few built monuments, but some of the domed baths built on Buda's thermal springs still operate in their original function today.

2. The Habsburg era and the unification of the city (18th-19th centuries)

After the expulsion of the Turks, the city was rebuilt in Baroque and Classicist styles. Traces of this can be seen in the Buda Castle District and the innermost parts of the Pest City Center.
Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, Budapest became one of Europe's fastest-growing metropolises. This is when the eclectic and Art Nouveau apartment palaces of the Pest side, the radial city structure, and the current silhouette of the Danube bank were formed.
Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square, and the Millennium Underground Railway (M1) were built for the 1896 millennium celebrations. This urban structural ensemble, complemented by the panorama of the Danube bank and the Buda Castle District, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

3. World War II and reconstruction

In the winter of 1944-45, Budapest suffered a severe siege. All the Danube bridges were blown up, and the Castle District was almost completely destroyed.
During the post-war reconstruction, the bridges were rebuilt similarly to their original forms but modernized. The restoration of the Buda Castle Palace took decades, and its interior spaces were completely transformed. The ornate roof structures and facades of many Pest apartment buildings were restored in a simplified form.

4. State socialism and the regime change (1949 to present)

The socialist era was the time of mass housing construction (panel program) and the development of the metro network (M2, M3). Few new buildings were erected in the city center, but the condition of the old apartment buildings deteriorated significantly.
After the 1989 regime change, political monuments were removed from public squares (these can now be seen in Memento Park on the outskirts of the city). From the 2000s, the renovation of historical buildings and the transformation of former industrial zones (rust belts) began.

Constraints and Consequences

Historical layers are often built upon each other: a building resting on medieval foundations might have received a Baroque facade, which was rebuilt in the 19th century, and then restored in a simplified form after the war. The cityscape is defined by this hybrid character.

This guide does not replace the detailed exhibitions of museums (e.g., Budapest History Museum, Hungarian National Museum); it exclusively provides the context visible in public spaces.

Uncertainties and Interpretational Differences

The assessment and restoration of the city's architectural heritage is a subject of ongoing social debate. The currently ongoing reconstructions in the Buda Castle District (restoring pre-World War II conditions) divide professional and public opinion.
